Griffin: Augustinian Monastery

The monastery of the Augustinian Hermits in Stargard was founded between 1267 and 1289/91.

Gryfik Klasztor augustianów

It was the first of the order’s four friaries in the Duchy of Pomerania. In addition to the monastery complex with its church, the monks owned fields within the town’s lands. They also bought parts of the nearby villages of Dalewo, Skalin and Storkówko. They had the right to preach, hear confession and absolve sins, as well as to bury the dead in and around the church. The church altars held a considerable number of precious relics. One of the monks, Augustine of Stargard, wrote the oldest Pomeranian chronicle, and the monastery also ran a school for young members of the order. The former monastery church was demolished in 1819/1820.

The Griffin presents a flaming heart, the attribute of St Augustine of Hippo – bishop, Doctor of the Church and author of the rule followed by many religious orders, including the Augustinians. Another attribute of St Augustine is the crosier, a sign of authority understood as service to the faithful, strength, leadership and pastoral care. An image of St Augustine from Stargard’s Augustinian church can still be seen today in St John’s Church. It is a choir-stall end panel from around 1450, hung on one of the pillars of the nave.
