International War Cemetery

Among Stargard's cemeteries, the International War Cemetery holds a special place – a place of remembrance where victims of war and prisoners of many nationalities are laid to rest.

It dates back to 1914, when it was established for the burial of Russian prisoners of war.

During the Second World War the cemetery served as the burial ground for the Stalag II D prisoner-of-war camp in Stargard and the POW hospital of Military District II. Today there are three monuments commemorating Russian prisoners of different faiths – Orthodox, Muslim and Jewish – dating back to the First World War. Separate monuments are dedicated to French and Italian prisoners who died during the Second World War.

In 1969 a monument by Sławomir Lewiński, dedicated to all those buried here, was erected at the cemetery entrance. At the end of the 1990s part of a mausoleum dedicated to Soviet soldiers, together with symbolic gravestones, was moved here from Freedom Square.

Today 5,000 victims of various nationalities rest in the cemetery.
