It was then that the Gate acquired its characteristic Mannerist gables decorated with curtain-shaped blind niches, as well as a ridge turret with a clock and bell.
At the same time the defence system was expanded, creating one of the most complex fortification complexes in the town. The inner gate was connected to an outer gate passage, and the whole was completed by a drawbridge and a barbican on the other side of the Ina. This elaborate defence system became unnecessary once the town walls lost their military role. The forecourt complex was demolished in 1780, leaving the Gate alone as a testimony to the former splendour of Stargard’s fortifications.
The Rampart Gate was badly damaged during the fighting in 1945, but was carefully restored after the war. Among other things, a latrine oriel – unique in Pomerania – was reconstructed. The original pointed-arch passage survived and still serves its purpose today.
