Ryszard Manna

The mural shows the face of Ryszard Manna (1933–1997), a Stargard visual artist, painter, draughtsman and graphic artist. The disintegrating elements of the portrait refer to his work and to his mosaics found around Stargard. The mural was initiated by Maciej Dura-Pomarański and painted by Maciej "Kreda" Jurkiewicz.

Ryszard Manna was born on 1 August 1933 in Brest on the Bug and moved to Stargard in 1945. He graduated from the State School of Fine Arts in Gdańsk, where he studied in the studio of Prof. Juliusz Studnicki, completing his studies in 1961. He was one of the group of artists known as the “Gdańsk landing party” – artists who, after the war, linked their work with Stargard.

Manna was a versatile artist. He worked in easel and mural painting, drawing and printmaking, and also designed publications, interiors and applied art. His works are held, among others, in the collection of the Archaeological and Historical Museum in Stargard. The museum’s collection includes his painting “Composition”, as well as numerous prints and drawings.

His work is also present in Stargard’s public space. Manna was the author or co-author of works associated with the town’s architecture, including mosaics and sgraffiti. The State Archives in Szczecin hold the artist’s legacy, including designs for the interiors and furnishings of the Museum in Stargard, exhibition boards, bookplates and models.

Ryszard Manna died in 1997 in Stargard and was buried in the town cemetery. His achievements remain part of the history of the town’s post-war art scene.
