The monument was erected in the interwar period and fitted with a metal plaque explaining the special significance of the site. A simplified model of the geographic grid was also placed on its top.
The monument, together with the surrounding trees, was restored in 1996 and placed under heritage protection. There is also an intriguing curiosity connected with it. Although it was meant to mark the exact course of the 15th meridian, modern measurements show that the actual line runs about 200 m further west. This inaccuracy results from the imprecision of surveying instruments at the time the monument was built – which is an interesting historical curiosity in its own right.
