Bastion (Basteja)

Walking along the medieval town walls, you will come across bastions – low defensive structures that strengthened the town's fortification system. Old Stargard had four of them, and three have survived: two near the Prisoners' Tower and one next to the Weavers' Tower.

The most distinctive of them, located by the Weavers’ Tower, was built in the 16th century as a cylindrical, single-storey structure projecting in front of the line of the walls, which allowed more effective defence of the town and fire at attackers from several sides. Its present appearance is the result of 19th-century rebuilding, when the former fortification was converted into a residential building. An extra storey was added, a roof was built and a staircase with a decorative gable was attached.

Although the Bastion was badly damaged during the Second World War, its 19th-century appearance was painstakingly recreated after the war. Today it houses the Archaeological and Historical Museum in Stargard, which since 2014 has held the historical festival “In the Land of the Griffin” by the Bastion, combining the history of the Thirty Years’ War with demonstrations of traditional crafts.
