Weir on the Ina

A 19th-century hydraulic engineering landmark and a stop along Stargard’s kayaking route.

Built in 1867 near Włosiennicza Street, the historic weir on the Ina River is a unique example of 19th-century hydraulic engineering. It was constructed on the historic site of the former Butchers’ Gate (Schlachtpforte), and its original purpose was to raise and regulate the river’s water level and supply the mill channel, ensuring a steady flow of water for the city’s mills and craftsmen.

Originally built by local carpenters from Stargard, the structure faithfully reflects the engineering craftsmanship of the industrial era. Although it has lost its former economic importance, it remains an important part of the city’s water system and a picturesque spot along Stargard’s historic greenbelt.

Today, the weir plays a special role in tourism. Due to the height of the water drop, it is a key point on the Ina River kayaking route, requiring paddlers to safely portage around the weir. As an integral part of the city’s historic landscape, the structure harmoniously combines the industrial technology of the past with the natural beauty of the river valley.
