Griffin: Jewish Cemetery

The kirkut was the cemetery where the Jewish community buried its dead; it was founded around 1700.

It was one of the earliest Jewish cemeteries in Pomerania. It was established on the Kalkenberg hill (today Wojska Polskiego 3). There was a chapel next to it, which was replaced by a new building at the beginning of the 20th century because of its poor condition. Between 1812 and 1938 around 900 people were buried in the cemetery. It probably ceased to exist after 1938. Several fragments of Stargard’s matzevot are kept in the Stargard Museum.

The Griffin stands in front of a matzevah – a Jewish gravestone – bearing the symbol of a broken candle. In Judaism, a blown-out or broken candle on a matzevah means that the person died a tragic death. It is a reference to the tragic fate of the Jews during the Second World War.
