Griffin: Town Charter

Granting Stargard town rights under Magdeburg law confirmed the development of the former stronghold and its outer settlement, and crowned its inhabitants' efforts to gain significant status in the Duchy of Pomerania.

The charter introduced new laws and allowed new settlers to move in. Town rights were solemnly granted by Duke Barnim I on 24 June 1243, the feast of St John the Baptist. As a result, Stargard received, among other things, the right to establish local authorities with their own jurisdiction, 150 łany (lans) of land, the right of navigation on the Ina, customs exemptions and the right to fell timber in the ducal forests.

The Griffin with attributes of medieval building technology – bricks and a trowel – draws attention to the nature of Stargard’s town charter. It involved laying out a grid of streets and building plots and, over time, erecting brick fortifications, churches and the Town Hall.
